The country's largest cloud and AI companies are changing how they sell data centers to the towns being asked to host them, after a wave of local opposition slowed or blocked projects worth an estimated $130 billion by the middle of this year. Google and Meta have both said they are working to address community mistrust with more disclosure about what a proposed facility will actually mean for a town's power grid, water supply and tax base.

## Money and transparency

Amazon has rolled out what it calls a Data Center Commitment, pledging to improve the environmental profile of its backup diesel generators and to disclose more about each facility's energy and water use. The company is also putting more than $1 billion over five years into job training, free community college and home energy-efficiency upgrades in host communities. Microsoft said in January it would cover electricity and grid costs tied to its facilities, and Meta says it has invested more than $550 million in water and wastewater infrastructure near its data centers.

The stakes are high: Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft together project more than $600 billion in capital spending this year, most of it going toward data center construction in the U.S. Data centers have also become a live issue in the midterm elections, with control of Congress and 36 governors' offices on the ballot and local resistance to new builds emerging as a flashpoint in several races.
