Japan posted a record trade deficit of 2.81 trillion yen, or about $17.8 billion, for the first half of its fiscal year, as war in Iran sent the price of oil imports sharply higher. The Finance Ministry's preliminary data, released Wednesday, showed exports for the April-to-September period climbing 18.4% from a year earlier to 63.5 trillion yen, while imports grew even faster, up 20.4% to 66.3 trillion yen — both record highs for the country.

## A blocked strait, a resource-poor economy

The deficit traces back to Japan's near-total reliance on imported oil and the disruption of one of its key supply routes. Brent crude has climbed from around $70 a barrel in February to roughly $110 a barrel, as conflict involving Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for Middle Eastern oil shipments. With that route largely closed off, Japan has had to secure oil through alternative, costlier paths, driving up its import bill even as the underlying volume of oil purchased hasn't necessarily grown.

The result is a trade picture that looks strong on the surface, with exports also setting a record, but is ultimately being overwhelmed by the cost of energy imports Japan has little ability to substitute in the short term. The deficit marks Japan's fifth straight month in the red, underscoring how directly the country's economy remains exposed to swings in Middle East oil supply even decades after it began diversifying its energy sources.
