Private credit funds are sitting on more cash than they have deals to put it into, a mismatch that's forcing direct lenders into what industry participants describe as a "small ball" game — fighting hard over smaller, scarcer deals rather than landing the kind of marquee financings that defined the asset class's boom years. Direct-lending funds raised $129.15 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 35% from a year earlier, even as actual lending activity slowed.

## Plentiful capital, scarce deals

Third-quarter lending volume fell 28% year-over-year to $49.77 billion, as more borrowers opted to return to the syndicated loan market now that banks are competing harder on pricing. That's left private credit funds holding record amounts of uncommitted capital, often called dry powder, with fewer deals to deploy it into.

The imbalance is starting to show up in deal terms: with so much capital chasing a smaller pool of opportunities, lenders are under pressure to concede ground on spreads, leverage levels and documentation protections just to win a deal. Banks, meanwhile, are growing more selective about which private credit managers they'll lend to themselves, increasingly concentrating fresh financing on the largest, top-tier firms while pulling back from smaller managers and those heavily exposed to struggling pockets of the market like commercial real estate.
