Taiwan's stock exchange shut its doors on Friday as Typhoon Champi closed in on the island, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds that prompted authorities to close government offices and schools in Taipei. The Taiwan Stock Exchange said settlements originally scheduled for Friday would be postponed to the next business day.

Champi briefly reached super typhoon strength earlier in the week — the tenth storm to hit that threshold in the northwest Pacific this season — before weakening slightly. Even so, its sustained winds remained at roughly 213 kilometers per hour, or about 132 miles per hour, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, as it approached the island.

## A market built on chips

The shutdown briefly halted trading on an exchange with a combined market value of around $5 trillion, one dominated by semiconductor giants including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Taiwan routinely closes its markets and schools ahead of major typhoons as a safety measure, and trading is expected to resume once the storm clears the island.
