New York is spending $10 million to launch the AI Jobs Institute, a new training hub in Long Island City, Queens, aimed at preparing tens of thousands of New Yorkers for careers in artificial intelligence. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the initiative, which is designed and operated by Pursuit, a tech workforce training and job-placement organization, with a goal of training 40,000 people by 2032.
A city with the most tech workers, reaching for a wider pool
New York already employs more tech workers than any other US city, and the new institute is meant to extend that advantage to residents who have traditionally been left out of the tech economy, particularly lower-income New Yorkers. Private funders including Ascendium Education Group, Google.org, Wells Fargo, Con Edison and Adobe will help pay to operate the center, while OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are separately supplying credits and certificates to a Queens nonprofit that has already trained about 500 people in AI skills.
