Rick Rieder, BlackRock's chief investment officer for global fixed income, says investors have a rare chance to lock in attractive yields in high-quality corporate bonds — a call he says he hasn't made with this much conviction in years. Speaking about his outlook for the fourth quarter, Rieder singled out investment-grade credit as the most compelling opportunity in the bond market right now, even as other corners of fixed income stay volatile.
A portfolio yielding more than 7%
Rieder said investors could, in theory, assemble a diversified bond portfolio yielding more than 7%, with less than three years of average duration and an average credit rating around A-. That combination of a short duration, high yield and strong credit quality is unusual, and Rieder frames it as a historic window for income-focused investors.
A big part of the opportunity, he said, lies in bonds issued by the biggest cloud and AI companies, known as hyperscalers. Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Oracle have together sold roughly $228.4 billion in bonds so far this year, as of October 20, to help fund their AI infrastructure buildouts. Rieder argues these companies combine low leverage with strong cash flow, meaning investors lending to them are being paid an attractive yield for what amounts to a high-quality credit risk.
